================
Keith Noel Emerson (* 2. November 1944 in TodmordenWest YorkshireEngland; † 10.

The Nice (Keith Emerson) - Karelia Suite 1969 using Hammond L100 with Leslie cabinets. The video shows Emerson throwing his L100 about and using the on/off switch to create the great rock effects that he has become known for - Emerson had previously learnt about these 'tricks' some years earlier from the legendary organist Don Shinn who played organ with The Soul Agents. Keith Emerson acknowledges that Don Shinn was a pioneer within the progressive rock movement during the late 60's and that he, Shinn, had a major influence on Emerson's style of playing. A black and white clip of The Nice, performing Bob Dylan's Country Pie at the Song Days Festival in Essen, Germany, on October11th, 1969. I know this track from their Five Bridges album, but this version seems a little slower and with just a bit more swing. The sound is mixed a little in favour of Emerson, with Lee Jackson's vocals being lowest in the mix (probably few complaints there right?) and the eternally underrated Brian Davidson's drums being pretty audible at all times. Love that overdriven organ tone. I quite liked what The Nice had going on, with Davidson's jazzy drumming having a swing and, dare I say groove, missing from Carl Palmer's technical chatter. Lee Jackson's elastic Vox bass tone was a million miles away from the more conventional Fender bass tones of the day. Emerson clearly had his sight on higher matters, dragging classical repertoire into the rock field and deftly throwing in quotes left right and centre. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto appears on this Bob Dylan cover!

mein Kommentar:

It's the 10 Best Songs From Emerson, Lake and Palmer according to Members of Facebook's ELP's Appreciation Group and Rock History music Group. For this one we only wanted fans who had all the albums. If you only knew “Lucky Man,” “C'est la vie” and “Karn Evil 9,” you couldn't vote. Thanks everyone for contributing especially in the shadow of losing Keith Emerson. #10 (Released July 6, 1972 - Trilogy) Tells the story about Emerson, Lake and Palmer. How the band was so good at arranging other composers work. They certainly wrote a lot of tunes but interpreted many classical composers inspirations. Case in point Aaron Copland. The group has two of his compositions on this list. We start with “Hoedown.” Originally a fiddle tune from Copland's 1942 ballet “Rodeo.” Like ELP the classical composer got inspiration for that piece from Williams Stepps “Bonaparte's Retreat.” There's lots of Emerson on this one. After playing in a Romanian Festival he leaned on that influence on the tune. It's a lively little ditty. #9 (Released November 19, 1973 – Brain Salad Surgery) From arguably their best album, “Brain Salad Surgery” Jerusalem opens the project and it's another interpretation. My ex-wife's late father (Herald Cooper)said he sang it church in Manchester, England as a boy and a choir performed it at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding. It's Hubert Parry's hymn built around a poem by William Blake that started the legend of Jesus possibly coming to England to further his studies. #8 (Released – November 1970 (UK) January 1, 1971 (US) - Debut) It was the very first song on that debut album. The Bartok inspired “The Barbarian” named after his “Allegro Barbaro.” It was a solid introduction to the band reinventing classical pieces. Something they sometimes got flack over but eventually prog-rockers accepted that this was their bag and they were the best at it. “The Barbarian” also was the most voted tune on our survey. Out of the 100+ ELP experts over 70% included it in their top 10. #7 (Released March 17, 1977 – Works Vol. 1) No, Emerson and Greg Lake, and his King Crimson pal Pete Sinfield didn't dress as pirates and visit Disneyland. Sinfield says the idea for “Pirates” came from watching Errol Flynn pirate movies. He told Record Collector, "The idea was pirates as an allegory for a Rock band on tour. When I read up on the subject it soon became obvious that pirates weren't at all romantic. Keith's music was very Gilbert & Sullivan, it was extraordinarily difficult to get the true nature of piracy into it.” READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE HERE http://rockhistorybook.com/music/top-...

The supergroup "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" is one of most successful rock bands in the subgenre of the Progressive rock. The band members Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums) showed their musical virtuosity in interpretations of classical pieces like "Pictures of an Exhibiton" by Russian composer Modest Mussorgski. The live album with the same title, which was issued as a low-priced record in 1970, helped the band to enormous popularity in Europe and USA. The song "Knife-Edge" from their debut album "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" is loosely based on Leoš Janáček "Sinfonietta" (1926). And the middle section of the song features parts of Johann Sebastian Bachs "First French Suite in D minor" (known as Bach Works Catalogue No. 812). Ironically both composers were not named on the original album release in 1970 ...

From http://www.slate.com ELP waited a few minutes offstage, then returned for the encore to play the Mussorgsky piece that they’d debuted at their first shows— “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Obscure classical music that rock fans had heard endlessly on FM. The fourth multipart musical suite of the night. As it ended, as the Moog ripped a classical melody into a series of short, rising glissandos, the choir from New York’s High School of Music and Art slipped into the dark corners of the stage. The lights came up. The choir and Lake started to sing. Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright As the more sentimental members of the audience chimed in, artificial snow fell from the ceiling and onto the main section of the stadium. And the concert was over, almost exactly two hours after its start.
